New Instructor Qualifications*
If you would like to join the Register of Logistics Instructors and are not yet a member of another register, you will need to complete one of the following DVSA Recognised, unregulated qualifications* with an Approved Examination Centre (AEC):
- If you are an existing registered LGV Driving Instructor or LGV/HGV Assessor you may be eligible to transfer free of charge.

Our Qualifications*
These unregulated logistics qualifications from VTCT Skills are subject to quality assurance arrangements.
They're based on the comprehensive standards devised by Skills for Logistics with the dual objective of promoting road safety and encouraging the professionalisation of the sector, assisting career development and progression.
We are delighted that these unregulated qualifications* are formally recognised by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
LGV Driving Instructor
Who is this LGV Driving Instructor qualification for?
LGV Driving Instructor is aimed at those LGV Drivers, Assessors or Trainers who wish to gain a professional qualification* to be able to train new and experienced drivers. You will have the skills to improve driver performance and assess drivers to a recognised national standard. You will be able to fully prepare LGV provisional licence holders for their DVSA tests. You will be provided with a framework of skills and knowledge to allow LGV Driving Instructors to teach LGV candidates using a variety of training tools to ensure an enhanced opportunity for success.
What does this qualification* cover?
It includes all the required elements to work effectively as a successful LGV Driving Instructor.
You must achieve all parts, which include:
- Part 1 – LGV Driving Instructor theory
- Part 2 – LGV Driving Instructor practical driving ability
- Part 3 – LGV Driving Instructor instructional ability
What could this qualification* lead to?
LGV Driving Instructors will be qualified to teach new LGV provisional licence holders, in the category of vehicle that they hold a full licence for. Additionally, they will be qualified to conduct skills training and assessments with full licence holders. They will be able to identify areas of improvement and recommend and deliver remedial training.
Driver Trainer / Assessor
Who is this Driver Trainer / Assessor (DTA) qualification* for?
Driver Trainer / Assessor (DTA) is aimed at experienced LGV Driver licence holders, who wish to gain a professional qualification* to be able to train and assess qualified LGV drivers, identify any driving faults, provide remedial action to prevent reoccurrence, improve driving standards and develop drivers’ skills to an advanced level.
What does this qualification* cover?
It includes all the required elements to work effectively as a successful DTA.
You must achieve all parts, which include:
- Part 1 – Driver Trainer/Assessor (DTA) theory
- Part 2 – Driver Trainer/Assessor (DTA) practical driving ability
- Part 3 – Driver Trainer/Assessor (DTA) practical training and assessment ability
What could this qualification* lead to?
A successful DTA will be able to conduct training and assessments on LGV full licence holders, identify areas for improvement, recommend and deliver remedial training. These could be in the areas of pre-employment assessment, post road traffic collision/incident occurrence or indeed to improve standards in road safety.
A Driver Trainer/Assessor (DTA) is a qualification* in its own rights and midpoint on the way to achieving the LGV Driving Instructor qualification*. Successful DTA’s will be strongly encouraged to gain experience as a DTA and continue their professional trainer studies and possibly train and qualify to become an LGV Driving Instructor, via VTCT Skills for Logistics.
It's aimed at experienced LGV Driver licence holders, who wish to gain a professional qualification* to be able to train and assess qualified LGV drivers, identify any driving faults, record them appropriately and report them.
Driver Assessor
Who is this Driver Assessor (DA) qualification* for?
Driver Assessor (DA) is aimed at experienced LGV Driver licence holders, who wish to gain a professional qualification* to be able to assess qualified LGV drivers, identify any driving faults, record them appropriately, report them and give feedback to the driver.
It will provide the framework to allow DAs to assess qualified LGV drivers using a variety of assessment tools.
What does this qualification* cover?
It includes all the required elements to work effectively as a successful Driver Assessor (DA).
You must achieve all parts, which include:
- Part 1 – Driver Assessor (DA) theory
- Part 2 – Driver Assessor (DA) practical driving ability
- Part 3 – Driver Assessor (DA) practical assessment ability
What could this qualification* lead to?
A successful DA will be able to conduct assessments on LGV full licence holders, identify faults, record them appropriately, be able to report them and give feedback to the driver. These could be in the areas of pre-employment assessment, post road traffic collision/incident occurrence.
Driver Assessor (DA) is the entry level qualification* in the LGV Driving Instructor pathway. Successful DA’s will be strongly encouraged to gain experience as a DA and continue their professional training studies and train to become a DTA or LGV Driving Instructor, via VTCT Skills for Logistics.

Registration and certification
On completing a DVSA recognised, unregulated qualification*, candidates will receive a Certificate of Achievement and a VTCT Skills for Logistics ID card, referencing the DVSA recognition scheme, which will be valid for five years. Candidate details, including licence entitlement will also be added to the Register of Logistics Instructors.
*Unregulated qualifications are not regulated by Ofqual, or included on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). However, unregulated qualifications are subject to external quality assurance by VTCT Skills.
