How to become an Approved Examination Centre and RLI Examiner

To become a VTCT Skills for Logistics  Approved Examination Centre (AEC) please complete an online application form for each. A set of Standard Operating Procedures provide an outline of our quality assurance mechanism.

  1. Introduction

The DVSA has provided official recognition of the VTCT Skills for Logistics – Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Instructor Qualification* (incorporating Driver Trainer / Assessor and Driver Assessor) which has been specifically designed to meet the evolving needs of the logistics industry.

Aims of the scheme

This qualification* has been developed with the dual objective of promoting road safety and encouraging a higher uptake of professional qualifications to assist career development and progression.

The qualification* seeks to provide experienced Instructors and Assessors, or those who would like to become one, an opportunity to be assessed against these standards. Once qualified candidates are entered onto the DVSA recognised professional VTCT Skills for Logistics - Register of Logistics Instructors.

 

  1. Approved Examination Centre (AEC)

VTCT Skills for Logistics will provide initial approval of Approved Examination Centres (AEC) which meet the criteria as set out in the VTCT Skills for Logistics – Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). To apply please complete the online form.

 

  1. On-going AEC approval and audit

As part of the on-going quality assurance process, VTCT Skills for Logistics will conduct remote monitoring visits and provide support and advice for which there will be a recurring annual fee (see Fees below)

 

  1. Resources

The VTCT Skills for Logistics package includes resources to support a uniform and standardised delivery of examinations, consisting of:

These resources are provided by VTCT Skills for Logistics at the point of Approved Examination Centre and RLI Examiner approval.

 

  1. Approved RLI Examiner

To apply to become an VTCT Skills for Logistics - Approved RLI Examiner you need a background in training or examination and have passed and be qualified in all 3 parts of the VTCT Skills for Logistics - LGV Driving Instructor Qualification*, or equivalent.

As part of the application process, you are required to complete an Approved RLI Examiner Application (available in your welcome pack) for each examiner to be trained, approved and registered to conduct LGV Driving Instructor, DTA or DA examination at AECs.

The minimum requirements to be considered as an Approved RLI Examiner are as follows:

  • A minimum of 3 years valid driving licence for the vehicle in which they intend to conduct examination i.e. category C (rigid) or category C+E (articulated vehicle).
  • LGV Driving Instructor qualification* with either VTCT Skills for Logistics or another DVSA recognised registers such as NRI and / or NVDIR (fully qualified in assessment and instructional ability); or MOD Defence Driving Examiner, Defence Licence Acquisition Instructor, or other Delegated Examiner.
  • Evidence to demonstrate the applicant's subject knowledge, experience and qualification.
  • Declaration as a fit and proper person.

Approved RLI Examiners are a distinct person and will not be able to examine Candidates to whom they have previously delivered LGV Driving Instructor, DTA or DA training to in the previous 24 months.

Approved RLI Examiners will have to pass a higher-level Driving Ability test (Part 2) with no more than 2 driving faults and pass a further test of Examining Ability (Part 3) with a grade 5 or 6.

The RLI Examiner course is delivered by a VTCT Skills for Logistics. 'Supervisor Examiner', is subject to a cost of £1,890 + VAT, including examination fee.

 

  1. Approved RLI Examiner certification

VTCT Skills for Logistics will issue a certificate for each Approved RLI Examiner which will remain valid for 5-years, subject to continuous professional development.

 

  1. Fees

The Applicant shall pay an AEC and Approved RLI Examiner approval fee, Candidate (LGV Driving Instructor, DTA or DA) examination fee in accordance with the table below.
